Monitoring & Reporting Results

Production execution generates data.
Monitoring and reporting turn that data into understanding.

This step answers the key questions:

  • Did production finish on time?

  • How long did it really take?

  • How well did production perform?

This page explains:

  • how production results are tracked in P4,

  • how Outbound Deliveries, Production Items, and reports are connected,

  • where to start when evaluating production performance.

From execution to insight

Production data is created during execution:

  • Production Item start and finish times,

  • produced quantities,

  • performance and efficiency indicators.

This data is not collected separately.
It is a direct result of executing Production Items on Production Lines.

Monitoring and reporting always reflect:

What actually happened in production.

What can be monitored during production

During and after execution, you can monitor:

  • production progress on each line,

  • status of Production Items,

  • delays or deviations from the plan.

This allows planners and team leaders to:

  • react to problems early,

  • adjust plans if needed,

  • maintain control during execution.

Monitoring focuses on current and recent production state.

Understanding production reporting

Reporting focuses on evaluation, not control.

Typical production reports answer questions like:

  • How long did production take from order to completion?

  • Where were delays introduced?

  • How efficiently were production lines used?

Reports are built on the relationship between:

  • Outbound Deliveries,

  • Production Items,

  • and their execution history.

This makes reporting traceable and reliable.

Production Lead Time: a key example

Production Lead Time measures the time between:

  • the creation of an Outbound Delivery,

  • and the completion of its Production Items.

This metric helps you understand:

  • how responsive production is,

  • where time is lost,

  • how planning and execution affect delivery performance.

Lead Time is calculated automatically based on real production data.

Performance and efficiency indicators

In addition to timing, P4 provides performance indicators such as:

  • production speed,

  • efficiency, availability and utilization (OEE).

These indicators are derived from:

  • planned vs. actual execution,

  • Production Line behavior,

  • Production Item performance.

They are used to:

  • identify bottlenecks,

  • compare planned and actual performance,

  • support continuous improvement.

Dashboards vs. detailed reports

P4 typically offers two perspectives:

  • Dashboards and widgets

    • quick overview,

    • current status,

    • high-level KPIs.

  • Detailed reports

    • historical analysis,

    • trend evaluation,

    • root-cause investigation.

Getting Started focuses on understanding what they show, not how to configure them.

Common first reporting misunderstandings

  • Expecting perfect alignment with the plan
    Reports reflect reality, not assumptions.

  • Looking only at Outbound Deliveries
Most production insight comes from Production Items.

  • Using reports without understanding execution
Without execution context, reports can be misleading.

Understanding the full flow prevents these mistakes.

What you should be able to do now

After completing this step, you should:

  • understand how production data is generated,

  • know where to monitor ongoing production,

  • understand how reporting connects orders, production, and execution,

  • be able to evaluate production results at a basic level.

You’ve completed the production basics

You now understand the full production flow in P4:

  1. Outbound Deliveries create demand

  2. Production Items define execution units

  3. Production Lines provide capacity

  4. Planning creates a production plan

  5. Execution turns the plan into reality

  6. Reporting evaluates the result

This foundation is enough to:

  • start using production in P4,

  • understand system behavior,

  • and grow into more advanced features.
