Handling units
A handling unit is an object to mainly manage the packaging of a related material produced or received.
Each Handling unit is defined by its Handling Unit Template. This template has a definition of:
What material can be packaged and it’s quantity
Each material can have either a defined quantity inside or a fluent quantity. Fluent quantity means we define the amount of material packaged inside during the receiving process or in production by partial declaration. When we have a defined quantity inside, the same applies only with the addition of splitting the quantity to as many handling units as is needed by the definition.
Example:
- Defined quantity inside = 10pcs, declaration quantity = 100pcs will produce 10 handling units.
- Fluent quantity, declaration quantity = 100pcs will produce 1 handling unit. What packaging is needed to create a Handling unit and it’s quantity
Each packaging has a definition of how many it is needed (Quantity) to create the handling unit and whether the packaging is taken from stock or is created automatically (Consume with creation). This usually differentiates a process of receiving (creating new stock) vs. production (consuming stock).
The same applies to the process of discarding (Discard with unit breakdown) the Handling unit (either by consumption or expedition).
Each handling unit template can be set to act as a default for:
Material

When selected as default, it will automatically be pre-selected when creating Production items.
Vendor/Customer

The same applies to vendor and customer, if there is a default handling unit template, it will be pre-selected in Inbound/Outbound deliveries when receiving material.
Creation of Handling unit
The process of Handling unit creation is universal, meaning it does not matter where it is being created (production/receive/manual) because it will adhere to the rules from the Handling unit template.
Step by step what is happening when working with Handling units:
Warehouse material batch is created for “core” material (material being packaged)
Warehouse material is created for “core” material in the quantity specified during the process
Handling unit is created (if Handling unit template was specified)
Based on the definition of HUT, it will allocate Warehouse material batches for each packaging
For each packaging, it either creates or reserves stock of the packaging material. Follow the diagram below
